![]() ![]() Reigen was made into a French language film in 1950 by the German-born director Max Ophüls as La Ronde. The furore after this play was couched in the strongest anti-semitic terms his works would later be cited as "Jewish filth" by Adolf Hitler. Schnitzler was branded as a pornographer after the release of his play Reigen, in which ten pairs of characters are shown before and after the sexual act, leading and ending with a prostitute. However, though Schnitzler was himself Jewish, Professor Bernhardi and Fräulein Else are among the few clearly-identified Jewish protagonists in his work. His works were often controversial, both for their frank description of sexuality (Sigmund Freud, in a letter to Schnitzler, confessed "I have gained the impression that you have learned through intuition - though actually as a result of sensitive introspection - everything that I have had to unearth by laborious work on other persons") and for their strong stand against anti-Semitism, represented by works such as his play Professor Bernhardi and the novel Der Weg ins Freie. The path north on the river pushes the story forward, as the friends juggle the elemental risks - fire, earth, air, water- in the midst of their more human dangers. Two friends from Dartmouth are on a month-long wilderness canoeing trip, first lake-hopping, then running the fictional Maskwa River (patterned on the Winisk?) towards Hudson Bay. ![]() The River, at first blush, has the simplest plot. “Write what you know” is the advice young writers receive, and each of these novels is set in a frame of Heller’s experience. Heller previously wrote a creative post-apocalyptic novel ( The Dog Stars, 2012) a thriller about an artist with anger issues ( The Painter 2014) a mystery story about a quirky, female investigator ( Celine, 2017) and now a morality tale about wilderness canoeing. The river itself seems no problem to them, as they feel prepared for that. Peter Heller’s fourth novel starts with smoke.įrom the first pages we are introduced to each of the elements which will dog the two friends - Wynn and Jack - as they canoe in the Canadian wilderness: a forest fire, two drunks on land, and a pair of arguing voices in the fog. ![]() It has brought its flute it is a long way. On top of that, characters aren’t introduced in that convenient way that authors are wont to do. Lastly, the book is peppered with awkward scene transitions. She hid their relationship because of a silly commitment she made with her friends, and rather than fess up to her friends that she had, indeed, entered into a relationship, she turned the relationship into a dirty secret. Thirdly, I found the whole motive for hiding the relationship too whimsical. ![]() She wilfully disregards Brandon’s feelings countless times, and I wasnt comfortable with her “two-timing.” The FMC comes across as deceptive and selfish. The female main character (FMC) was judgey, and entirely too antagonistic to the people that are her supposed “best friends.” If the author was going for a “real” character-complete with all the flaws-, I’m afraid this was way off the mark. Secondly, in as much as I liked the premise of the book-30-ish divorcee finding herself-, I feel it wasn’t properly executed. And I acknowledge that some errors won’t be spotted by the “everyday reader,” but some of the mistakes were so glaring. I’m a keen-eyed reader and also a proofreader-in-training so, understandably, filtering a written work for errors is second nature to me. ![]() ![]() For one, some chapters read like a first draft-with all the grammatical errors.
